NT Cricket's Lack of Disclosure around Tribunal and Fixed Penalty System continues to undermine Cricket in the Territory
It appears that NT Cricket has ceased providing round previews and post-match write-ups due to being overwhelmed by seasonal commitments. Key staff positions remain unfilled, and the focus has shifted to the mid-year carnival and the Top End Cup. Allegedly, the CEO of NT Cricket has been fielding phone calls from clubs regarding indiscretions in Sunday cricket while actively avoiding the public disclosure of reports and suspensions.

Earlier in the season, a player was allegedly suspended for two playing days for threatening sexual violence, specifically rape, against another player’s sister. In contrast, a Sunday cricket captain and an infringing Saturday player each received three playing days suspension for allowing a player to participate under an alias without a permit on multiple occasions. Whether one believes the latter punishment fits the crime or not, the former clearly does not. This inconsistency is further exemplified by last year's incident, where an umpire was initially banned from officiating nationwide for a Facebook comment deemed racist. It is, therefore, understandable why NT Cricket might seek to keep these contradictions from public scrutiny, though such an approach is to their own detriment.

From a professional organisational standpoint, it is indefensible the judicial system could deem that a player’s conduct involving a rape threat should be addressed through non-disclosure and a fixed penalty system rather than appearing before a tribunal. The lack of transparency regarding tribunal hearings and the non-disclosure of reports and fixed penalties has significant repercussions for NT Cricket.

It undermines the integrity of the governing body and erodes trust within the cricket community. Players, officials, and fans are left uninformed about the standards and consequences of misconduct, leading to a pervasive sense of injustice and disillusionment. Furthermore, the failure to openly address and communicate these issues could result in decreased participation and support for NT Cricket, thereby damaging its reputation and effectiveness in managing the sport, particularly when clubs are making substantial progress in the women’s competition.
